Keepin' Cozy for the Home Stretch

We don't know about you, but the chilling wind is doing a number on our skin and hair this Winter. Below is a collection of recipes that include easy to procure ingredients you may already have in your home.

For Frizzy/Curly Hair:

- Coconut oil or olive oil

  1. Warm a half cup of coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl until liquified (or, just pour half a cup of olive oil in bowl).

  2. Dip your fingers in the bowl and slowly coat your dry curls from roots to tips with oil, working in sections until fully saturated.

  3. Clip your hair up, cover it with a shower cap, and leave it on for at least an hour before rinsing and shampooing your hair. If your hair is incredibly dry and/or damaged, leave it on overnight and rinse in the morning.

For Shine and Softness:

- 1 ripe avocado

- 1 tablespoon of argan oil or olive oil

- 1 tablespoon honey

- 1/8 cup coconut milk (or almond milk, if you’re in a pinch)

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender.

  2. Smooth the mixture throughout your dry hair, from roots to tips, then wrap and clip your hair up.

  3. Leave on for at least 30 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual.

For Flakes and Dandruff:

- 1/4 cup water

- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

- 6-8 drops of tea tree oil

- 2 aspirin

  1. Mix the water and apple cider vinegar in a clean spray bottle.

  2. Add the tea tree oil, swirling until mixed.

  3. Crush the aspirin, pour the powder in the bottle, and swirl it around until dissolved.

  4. Saturate your scalp with the spray, letting it sit for 30 minutes before shampooing and conditioning like normal.

For Oily or Greasy Hair:

- 2 tablespoons honey

- 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel

- 1 squeeze of a lemon wedge (or half a teaspoon of lemon juice)

  1. Combine all three ingredients in a bowl and stir until mixed.

  2. Rake it through your damp hair, focusing on your scalp.

  3. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing.

For Itchy Dry Hair:

- 2 tablespoons coconut oil

- 1 tablespoon honey

- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  1. Add the coconut oil to a bowl.

  2. Mix the honey and apple cider vinegar in with the oil.

  3. Work the mixture through your dry roots, making sure to fully saturate your scalp before moving to your ends.

  4. Leave on for 30 minutes before shampooing.

Best Vegan Hair Mask:

- 3/4 cup coconut oil

- 3/4 cup shea butter

- 1/2 cup olive oil

  1. Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and olive oil to a sauce pan over low heat.

  2. Stir until fully melted, then remove from heat.

  3. When the mixture is room temperature (or just slightly warm), rake it through your hair—avoiding the roots, if you have fine, naturally oily hair—and let it sit for an hour.

  4. Shampoo and condition as usual to get the excess oil out. If your hair is fine and easily weighed down, try slathering your hair with conditioner first, then shampoo and condition again.
