Many of us intuitively understand there are benefits to "shopping local". But did you know that 68 cents of every dollar spent at a food co-op goes back into its local community? (Source: Lift Economy)
Choosing to shop local has real economic impact, often described as the "local multiplier effect". The local multiplier effect - a concept coined by John Maynard Keynes - explains how every dollar spent at a local business recirculates multiple times benefiting the community. How? Here are just two examples:
Local sourcing. In our case, WCFC buys from over 100 regional farmers and food suppliers who do not distribute their products through big box or chain stores. Supporting us means supporting them, their businesses, and their employees.
Jobs and Employment. Local employment means opportunity and stability for our community.
Shopping local = long term & lasting impact!
